Healthy breastfeeding can also help the new mother get rid of post-partum depression and also promotes healthy weight loss after pregnancy.

Healthy eating for mothers after pregnancy is the most important. Breastfeeding mothers use up to 500-600 calories per day for breast milk which makes healthy eating much more important. Intake of good protein is necessary. Include lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, nuts and seeds. Also fish with high mercury levels can be ignored.

Fruits and vegetables are the most important part of the diet. It is because they have antioxidant properties. Good fruits and vegetables are to be consumed both during your lunch and dinner. Yoghurt is a very good component post pregnancy so it can be consumed along fruits and snacks.

Drinking enough water is advised to all the new mothers out there. When you are breastfeeding your child, you need more fluids. This may even make you thirstier throughout the day which is a healthy sign. Hence drink lots of water before you are about to breastfeed your baby.

It is important to note that vitamin supplements and mineral supplements cannot replace a healthy diet. When you consume a balanced and healthy diet, there is no need for in taking any food supplement or vitamin supplements. It is advisable that vegetarian mothers should supplement with B12. Always consult a good and reliable nutritionist before you make any changes in your diet after pregnancy. Health of the baby always depends on the health of the mother for few months after pregnancy.
